Risk and return over the past year
Each dot is a coin with a full year of prices; its size shows market value. Further right is more volatile; higher is a better one-year return, with the line at $100 marking break-even. Stablecoins and wrapped tokens are left out.
How the 10 largest move together
Correlation of daily returns over the past year, from −1 (opposite) to +1 (in step). Stablecoins and wrapped tokens are left out.
How the numbers are calculated
- Returns use daily closing prices in US dollars. Volatility is the standard deviation of daily log returns, scaled by √365 because crypto trades every day.
- Max drawdown is the largest fall from a previous high to a later low within the period.
- Beta and correlation compare each coin's daily returns with Bitcoin's on the same days. A beta of 1.5 means the coin has typically moved 1.5% for each 1% move in Bitcoin.
- Stablecoins are coins whose price barely moves (annualised volatility under 5% over 90 days). Wrapped tokens such as WBTC or stETH track another coin's price. Both are excluded from the risk charts.
- Data: prices, market values and rankings come live from CoinPaprika; daily price history from the public market data of Kraken, with Coinbase and Binance.US as fallbacks. A scheduled job saves a year of history for the top 30 each day, which the page uses for the risk charts and whenever the live feeds are unavailable.
